Here’s Why Brazilians Want Tate to Beat Nunes at UFC200
Leading up to the Women’s Bantamweight title defense at UFC 200, most Brazilians seem to be supporting Miesha Tate.
That is at least, how it appears in the SpinningBackFist community. According to some rough analytics, somewhere in the region of 80-85% of our fans hail from Brasil. Which is why it was a little shocking/confusing to see that the majority of which, have sided with Miesha Tate over Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.
In the Facebook comment section for a recent SBF Tate/Nunes article, we’ve seen a big response (thank you by the way) in favour of ‘Cupcake’. Take a look at some excerpts below:
Rodrigo S.: “…miesha Tate will win in the first round”
Rohan R.: “Vai ser um duelo de trocação e luta agarrada mas vou aposta minhas fichas na tate/It’s going to be a duel of standup and fight attached but I’ll bet my chips at Tate”
Manuel N.: “Tate vai vencer/Tate is gonna win”
Antônio S: “Sou mais você Tate”
Patrick R. R.: “Go ! Miesha Tate”
As well, there were a couple comments we aren’t even sure the meaning of…
“Bro never step on the other the world is a ferris wheel you’re upstairs and you never know when you’re going is lem down that belt is running so much is unpredictable do you know who’s gonna stay that belt”
For now we will file that under “poor auto-translation”, if anyone wants to do a better job please let us know.
So, what’s the deal? Why are so many fellow-Brazilians against Nunes on this one? We had a little meeting and here’s some reasons we came up with:
Reason #1 – The Ronda Rousey Effect
A lot of people love to hate Ronda, and back on The Ultimate Fighter Season 18 it was Rousey versus Tate. Their second bout (Ronda won both) pretty much made them mortal enemies. Since then Miesha has vowed she wants Randa for a third fight, preferably at MSG.
So, perhaps fans want to see that rematch for the Bantamweight title. Perhaps when Ronda did away with Beth Correia in 34 seconds down in Rio, it really struck a chord.
Reason #2 – Nunes Lacks Experience
With 16 fights under her belt, the Lioness has not fought the calibre of fighters, in my opinion, that Tate has. Nunes is 5-1 in the UFC and overall 7-1 in Brazil, so you’d think she were a fan favourite. Her recent fights against Shevchenko, McMann and Baszler (no disrespect to them) do not match up with Miesha’s most recent fights.
Both have lost to Cat Zingano, but Tate is coming off of hard-fought victories against Holly Holm and Jessica Eye. In addition to two fights against Rousey, to me, she has the edge experience-wise.
Reason #3 – Tate Won Fans Over vs. Holm
After taking a beating for nearly the whole fight, with a minute-and-a-half left in the fifth round of the championship match, Tate choked Holly Holm unconscious to win the belt. I’m thinking that performance could have won her a lot of fans in the country of roughly 200 million.
We (or at least I) haven’t see that type of perseverance out of Nunes.
Amanda Nunes is a beast though, a great striker with devastating kicks. It will be interesting to see what happens.
If you want to let us know why you prefer Tate or Nunes, post in the comments.
